10 And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people.
11 For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord.
This book was written by Luke the physician, who writes with compassion, warmth and carefully puts together the perfect humanity of Jesus from His birth to His ascension.
Luke wasn’t an eye witness of the events in his Gospel but relied on testimony, eyewitness accounts and written sources to complete this book and The Acts of the Apostles.
As we look at the passage we see how God used an angel to come to the shepherds looking after their flocks near Bethlehem to proclaim the good news that a Saviour, Christ the Lord was born.
It is interesting how the angels came to the shepherds since we know culturally they were poor people and not someone of importance likes of the priests or elders.
So why did the angel come to the shepherds instead of the priests or religious leaders? This takes us back to verse 10 which says ‘I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all People’. They went to the shepherds ~ people who were held in pretty low regard in our society, yet they figure frequently in scripture and of course Christ is the great Shepherd.
The covenant relationship which had previously been a privilege extended to the Jewish people alone was now going to be available to all. The fact that the angle appeared to the shepherds is symbolic of this inclusive nature of the new covenant which was to include the gentiles as well as the Jews.
There hasn’t been, nor ever will be again, such an epic event as the birth of Christ Jesus. The declaration of the angel saying ‘I bring good news of great joy’ is almost an understatement!
This is the very theme at the root of all scripture ~ God’s plan of redemption for mankind.
Everything that has gone before in scripture has been leading to this momentous occasion ~ from all through the Old Testament with its many prophesies of the coming Messiah.
It’s all been leading to this moment when the angel appears before the shepherds and declares ‘For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, who is Christ the Lord’.
BECAUSE IT BANISHED FEAR… 10 Fear not
BECAUSE IT BROUGHT GREAT JOY… I bring you good tidings of great joy,
BECAUSE IT IS FOR ALL PEOPLE… which shall be to all people.
BECAUSE IT EMPHASISES THE VALUE OF ONE INDIVIDUAL… 11 For unto you
BECAUSE IT SAVES THE SINNER… Saviour, which is Christ the Lord.
